FC Augsburg wins final in penalty shootout against RB Salzburg! After 2 exciting and high-class days, the guests from Augsburg emerged victorious against the defending champions RB Salzburg.
In the two thrilling semifinals, RB Salzburg defeated the guests from Budapest 2-0, and FC Augsburg triumphed 3-0 against Austria Vienna. Both teams had already emerged as tournament favorites during the group stage. They both won their group convincingly and did not concede any goals in the process.
With perfect conditions and two excellent pitches, and fantastic football weather, the numerous spectators were treated to attractive and fast-paced games from the first match onwards. Already in the first group stage matches from Saturday, it was evident that RB Salzburg and FC Augsburg were the favorites to win their groups, with an exciting battle for the second-place spot for the semifinals behind them. At the end of the first day, it was very close in both groups, with 8 teams still in contention for the semifinals.
Day two started early at 08:30 am again under excellent conditions. In Group A, Red Bull Salzburg qualified as group winners, and FK Austria Vienna as runners-up for the semifinals. In Group B, FC Augsburg comfortably secured first place, followed by MTK Budapest as runners-up into the semifinals.
After the team presentations and the playing of the national anthems, the two semifinals took place in front of a well-filled grandstand. This was followed by the placement matches before the big final kicked off at 4:30 pm. The Mozart City team had more possession but failed to create clear goal-scoring opportunities. Both teams had not conceded a goal on their way to the final and largely neutralized each other. After a goalless 30 minutes, it went to a penalty shootout. After 5 shooters on both sides, it was 4-4. In the sixth round, the young bull failed to score against the goalkeeper, and after the confidently converted penalty by Augsburg, the guests from Augsburg celebrated their second victory at the tournament since 2014.
